چکیده

Studying the mixing of riverine freshwater and coastal water is the fundamental step to further understand the balance of a coastal/estuarine ecosystem (e.g., Hickey et al. 2010), seabed properties, sediment budgets (Gelfenbaum & Kaminsky 2010), and the sustainable management of the fluvial-estuary habitat (e.g., damming, dredging). The nearfield of a river plume represents an energetic environment because it involves the lift-off and subsequent lateral spreading of the freshwater outflow. As the lateral spreading must cause flow acceleration, the plume near field is highly turbulent (Hetland 2005; MacDonald et al. 2007) and may be dominated by locally generated shear instabilities (Geyer et al. 2010). With improved sensor and computing technology, recent field and numerical studies provided significant insights into the complex hydrodynamics near the plume lift-off zone and nearfield (e.g., MacDonald et al. 2007; Kilcher & Nash 2010; Elias et al. 2012). However, researchers are only beginning to understand how the near field plume dynamics affect the delivery of sediments. For instance, high level of suspended sediment concentration is often observed in the plume nearfield (Spahn et al.

Dynamics of Sandwaves under Combined Wave - Current Forcing and Mine Burial Processes, and Instrumentation for Measuring Nearshore Morphologic Change and Hydrodynamic Forcing

Our long terms goals are to understand sediment transport processes, the relevant physical forcing processes and the resulting morphologic evolution of river mouths and tidal inlets and shoals. Specific goals include understanding bedform characteristics (ripple to sandwave and sandbar scale) in relation to wave-and current-forced mean and turbulent flow. OBJECTIVES 1. Measure the currents, hyd...

Development of a Computer Model for the Prediction of Littoral Sediment Transport Rate

In this paper, longshore sediment transport in littoral zones is investigated. For investigation of sediment transport in the nearshore zone, the effects of waves, currents and topographical conditions of coast are considered. Linear wave theory was used for the investigation of the wave behaviour. Governing equations of littoral current are continuity and momentum ones. For calculating concent...

Interactions of Waves and River Plume and their Effects on Sediment Transport at River Mouth (RIVET I)

The interaction between the hydrodynamics and complex bathymetry can produce highly heterogeneous and locally energetic flows, e.g., in a tidal inlet dominated by tidal flow and wave-current interaction. Consequently, the morphological evolution around such tidal inlet also becomes very dynamic. These two factors cause concerns over navigation safety especially in areas where routine surveys ar...

Sediment Trapping Pathways and Mechanisms through the Mekong Tidal River and Subaqueous Delta

A long-term goal of our sediment transport and deposition investigations is to link sediment-transport processes to the formation and preservation of event beds in sediment deposits. The general aim of this project is to investigate how forcing processes affect the sediment-transport dynamics that act to effect the delivery and retention of fine-grained sediment through tidal rivers and in shal...
